Medical Guardian is a company on a mission to give affordable, reliable medical alert services to everyone who wants to live life on their own terms and keep their independence no matter their limitations.

Famous TV mom Florence Henderson, best known for her role on the Brady Bunch, has enlisted as their spokesperson. Medical Alert is hoping that the active 80-something will help seniors realize that their service isn’t only for people who are in poor health. It’s also for active, independent seniors who’d like some extra peace of mind at home and on the go.

How does the Medical Guardian work?

The Medical Guardian medic alert system is designed to be simple and intuitive to use, which is crucial in times of high stress. You wear a pendant in one of three ways: attached to a belt, on your wrist, or around your neck like a necklace.

Here’s how it works:

  1. A Medical Guardian client presses the alarm button on her pendant.
  2. The pendant sends a signal to the base station.
  3. The base station notifies the monitoring center of a possible emergency.
  4. A Medical Guardian certified medical operator will talk to the client through a two-way radio in the base station to find out what kind of help they need.
  5. The operator will contact the person of the client’s choice. They can call a neighbor, a relative, or have an ambulance sent to the home right away.
  6. The operator stays on the line with you until help arrives.

Medical Guardian Products

Medical Guardian gives you a choice of four distinct medical alert systems: Two of them are for in-home use only, and two of them can be used both at home and on the go.

1. Classic Guardian (Telephone Landline Required)

As the name implies, this is the classic Medical Guardian plan that can only be used if you have a telephone landline in your home. The Classic Guardian system can detect a signal from your alarm button when you’re up to 1,300 feet away from the base station. That’s the longest range of protection offered by ANY at-home medical alert system. With this system, you know you’ll be covered if you’re out at the mailbox or in the backyard.

In addition to plugging this unit into a phone jack, it also needs to be plugged into an electrical socket for power. The unit comes with a 32-hour backup battery, so even if you experience a power outage, you’ll still be covered in the event of an emergency.

Included with this plan:

  • A base unit with a signal range of 1,300 feet
  • (1) Water-resistant emergency help button
  • 32 hours of backup power on the base unit
  • Free coverage for your spouse (extra help button must be purchased separately)

The items above are included with your subscription.

Add-Ons for this plan:

  • Wall button
  • Lockbox
  • Additional buttons

Cost:

  • Monthly Plan: $29.95 per month
  • Quarterly Plan: $29.95 per month (that’s $89.95, billed quarterly)
  • Annual Plan: $27.45 per month (That’s $329.45, billed yearly)

Includes: Free lockbox, (1) free month of service, free ground shipping

Cellular Plans

Medical Guardian has plans that work using a cellular network, so no landline is required to use them. You don’t need a cell phone or a cell phone plan to use them, either. Medical Guardian uses AT&T’s cellular network, which is available nationwide. If you want to be sure that you have AT&T cellular coverage in your area, you can use this AT&T Coverage Viewer.

2. Home Guardian (No Landline Required)

No landline is required with the Home Guardian Medical Alert System. This modern update to a traditional home alert system uses a cellular network to connect to the monitoring center when you press the help button on your pendant.

The base station will pick up a signal from the help button from as far as 600 feet away in all directions. The base unit has a backup battery that will keep you covered for 30 hours if the power goes out in your home.

Included with this plan:

  • A base unit with a range of 600 feet
  • Base station display for date, time, temperature and cellular signal strength
  • (1) Water-resistant emergency help button
  • 30 hours of backup power on the base unit
  • Free coverage for your spouse (extra help button must be purchased separately)

The items above are included with your subscription.

Add-ons for this plan:

  • Wall button
  • Lockbox
  • Additional buttons
  • Fall detection pendant

Cost:

  • Monthly Plan: $34.95 per month
  • Quarterly Plan: $34.95 per month (that’s $104.85, billed quarterly)
  • Annual Plan: $384.45 per month (That’s $384.45, billed yearly)
  • Annual Plan Includes: Free lockbox, (1) free month of service, free ground shipping.

3. Mobile Guardian (No Landline Required)

This service gives you a handheld base station and a wearable help button that you can use at home just like any other Medical Guardian System; however, you can also carry the Mobile Guardian with you anywhere you go. The handheld base station is about the size of a deck of cards and is easy to carry in the included leather carrying case.

To use this device, you just press your wearable help button or the help button that’s on the base station to contact the Medical Guardian monitoring center. They’ll talk to you through the base station and will also receive your GPS coordinates so that you can be easily found by either emergency medical responders or the contact of your choice.

You don’t need a landline or a cell phone plan to use the Mobile Guardian. The main requirement is that there has to be AT&T cellular network coverage for this medical alert system to work properly.

This base station needs to be recharged every 24 hours, but it only takes two hours for it to charge fully. The handheld base station is not water-resistant.

Included with this plan:

  • GPS technology so you’ll be located quickly wherever you are
  • Handheld base station/charging cradle
  • Leather carrying case for the base station
  • (1) Water-resistant emergency help button
  • Help button has a range of 350 feet
  • 24-hour battery life between charges
  • Free coverage for your spouse (extra help button must be purchased separately)

The items listed above are free with your subscription.

Add-ons for this plan:

  • Wall button
  • Lockbox
  • Additional buttons

Cost:

  • Monthly Plan: $39.95 per month
  • Quarterly Plan: $39.95 per month (that’s $119.85, billed quarterly)
  • Annual Plan: $439.45 per month (That’s $439.45, billed yearly)
  • Annual Plan Includes: Free lockbox, (1) free month of service, free ground shipping.

4. Premium Guardian (No Landline Required)

The Premium Guardian is an all-in-one at home and on-the-go medical alert system. Unlike the other offerings from Medical Guardian, the Premium system doesn’t have a separate base station that you activate by pressing a wearable help button. Rather, the help button and base station are combined into one small unit that you wear around your neck or clipped to your belt. This system can’t be worn on the wrist due to its size.

To use this medical alert system, just press the button on your pendant to contact the monitoring center. You’ll can speak to the monitoring center agent directly through your pendant. The Premium Guardian system also has GPS locating capabilities and optional fall detection technology. It has to be charged every 36 hours, and it takes 4 hours to reach a full charge.

You don’t need a landline or a cell phone to use this system, but make sure to confirm that the AT&T Cellular network covers your area. The Premium Guardian is for single-person use only. If more than one person needs to use your medical alert system, this isn’t the right model for your household.

Included with this plan:

  • (1) Device with GPS technology
  • Charging cradle
  • 36-hour battery life between charges

The items listed above are free with your subscription.

Add-ons for this plan:

  • Lockbox
  • Fall detection technology

  • Monthly Plan: $49.95 per month
  • Quarterly Plan: $49.95 per month (that’s $149.85, billed quarterly)

About the Add-On Options

Medical Guardian’s add-on options aren’t included in the basic cost of each product but have to be purchased separately for an additional fee.

Add-on options include:

Fall detection. The fall detection pendant is designed to detect a fall with motion sensors and call the life alert monitoring center for you. A fall of at least 18-inches is required to activate the alarm. However, the company states that no fall detector can pick up 100 percent of falls, so always push your pendant button too whenever possible. Cost: An additional $10 a month.
Extra pendant (neck or wrist). If you want a second person to use your Medical Guardian system, you’ll need an extra pendant. You may also want both styles of alert buttons, so you have more options. Cost: An additional $2 a month.

Wall button. Once synched up with your base station, the wall-mounted button offers a way for you to call for help if you aren’t wearing your pendant and aren’t near the base station. Cost: An additional $2 a month.

Lockbox. Medical Guardian’s lockboxes are weatherproof and safely store your house key to give your emergency contacts and EMTs fast access into your home without needing to break in when there’s an emergency. Cost: An additional $2 a month.

You can only cancel after 90 days. The exception to that is if you cancel and return your device with 10 days from the point of sale. In that case, you’ll be refunded in full minus a $50 restocking fee.

Customer Feedback

Most customers say the Medical Guardian is comfortable to wear, easy to use and the monitoring center agents are friendly and helpful. However, I’ve seen repeated complaints that it takes too long to obtain a refund if you decide to return it and it’s difficult to reach a human being when you have a question about your return. The other complaint that keeps coming up is that the instructions aren’t very useful and don’t mention key steps like plugging the Classic Guardian into a phone jack and turning on the reset switch on the back of the device.

Medical Guardian has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which indicates that the overall level of customer service is very good.

Pros & Cons

The Good:
  • Medical Guardian has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Their equipment is free.
  • There’s no penalty to cancel your service after 90 days.
  • Their call center is UL certified, which means it meets a high standard of quality.
  • You can add a second person to most Medical Guardian coverage just by purchasing a second help button pendant.
  • Medical Guardian offers a range of options to meet your needs.

The Bad:
  • No pill reminders.
  • Requires a 90-day commitment contract.
  • No option for check-in calls.
  • Hasn’t been in business for as long as some other life alert companies.
  • No free shipping unless you choose to pay for a year in full.
  • Charges monthly fees for equipment like lockboxes and extra pendants. The charges are small but add up over time.

Final Recommendation

The Medical Guardian company doesn’t go overboard with services like some other medical alert companies do. They keep things simple and easy to understand. However, it’s a negative that they charge monthly fees for equipment like wall buttons, extra pendants and lockboxes. That said, the company appears to have an excellent customer service track record and strives to offer high-quality service. Their systems are designed to cover a 3,000 square foot home, and their staff is highly trained. The Medical Guardian is a reliable medical alert system for independent living.
